Meet Sybil Baloy
Sybil, a nurse from South Africa, answered God's call to serve children in Mozambique and has spent decades building clubs, schools, and hope.
A Letter of Surrender
"Mom and Dad, I am asking you to hand me over to Jesus. He is more faithful than a husband."
Sybil was born in South Africa and came to faith in Jesus at 21. While working as a nurse, she visited Mozambique soon after the war and saw children in severe need.
The words of Matthew 25 stayed with her: feed the hungry, welcome the stranger, care for the sick. She knew God was calling her, even though it disrupted the life she had planned.
Her parents and friends were afraid for her safety and urged her to wait. Instead, Sybil wrote a formal letter asking her parents to release her into God's hands.
On September 4, 1990, she resigned from the hospital. In November, she moved to Chokwe to begin the work God had placed on her heart.
From One Ball to 20+ Clubs
Sybil began by taking a ball into neighborhoods, gathering children to play, and then teaching prayer, Bible stories, and songs.
She asked each group if she could return weekly. That simple rhythm became the foundation of long-term discipleship.
Today, the ministry runs 20+ clubs, including youth groups, Scripture memory, and mentoring for girls and boys as they grow toward adulthood.
Education for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children
As the clubs grew, Sybil saw the need for formal education that could raise both committed believers and capable leaders.
She started with a preschool in a church building. The first graduating class had seven children; now roughly 70-80 graduate each year.
Families asked for a full school, and the vision centered on children with the fewest resources. Early funding even included crocheting and selling bags made from plastic.
The ministry continues adding opportunities and now carries a 4-hectare vision for secondary and trade training in carpentry, welding, sewing, and practical skills so students can build dignified futures.
